Ingredients

Scale
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 0.25 cup pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 1.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.25 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate chips, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: In a light-colored saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter until it turns golden brown and develops a nutty aroma (about 8-10 minutes). Pour into a mixing bowl to cool.
  2. Combine ingredients: Stir in maple syrup and dark brown sugar until smooth. Add vanilla, maple extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, flour, and baking powder; mix until a dough forms. Chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  3. Shape cookies: Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop dough into bear shapes on the sheet and refrigerate for another 20 minutes.
  4. Bake: Bake for 20-23 minutes until lightly browned on the bottom. Allow cooling on a wire rack.
  5. Decorate: Melt chocolate chips and pipe designs onto cooled cookies.
