  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (33 grams)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk (120 ml)
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil (80 ml)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee or hot water (120 ml)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature (226 grams))
  • 2/3 cup Nutella (176 grams)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar (375 grams)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (31 grams)
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream (45 ml)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3/4 cup Nutella (200 grams)
  • 14 hazelnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix egg, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and brewed coffee until combined.
  4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner two-thirds full with batter.
  6. Bake for about 18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.
  8. For the Nutella Buttercream: Beat unsalted butter until creamy, then gradually add Nutella followed by powdered sugar and cocoa powder alternately with heavy cream. Mix in vanilla until smooth.
  9. Frost cooled cupcakes generously with the buttercream and top each with an extra dollop of Nutella and a hazelnut.
