Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium-sized apples (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  1. Prepare lemon water by mixing cold water and lemon juice in a large bowl.
  2. Wash and peel the apples, then slice them into ½-inch thick rings using a mandoline or sharp knife.
  3. Core each apple ring and immediately soak them in the lemon water mixture.
  4. For the syrup, combine water, sugar, cinnamon sticks, and cloves in a saucepan over medium-low heat; stir until sugar dissolves and simmer for about 3 minutes. Add red food coloring gradually until desired shade is achieved.
  5. Drain apple rings from lemon water and cook them in the syrup over low heat for 3-5 minutes until slightly softened.
  6. Pack apple rings into mason jars, covering them completely with syrup, leaving about ½-inch headspace.
  7. Remove air bubbles with a non-metallic utensil and seal jars tightly.
