  • 1/2 cup (112g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups (310g) sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
  • 2 1/4 cups (504g) unsalted butter
  • 8 cups (920g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp (75-105ml) water or cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. In another bowl, beat butter, oil, and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla and alternating dry ingredients with buttermilk.
  3. Divide batter into three bowls: one for vanilla, one with melted chocolate, and another colored with black gel icing.
  4. Layer spoonfuls of the batters into the prepared pans and swirl gently.
  5. Bake for about 20 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool before frosting.
  6. For frosting, mix butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, salt, and water until smooth.
  7. Frost the cooled cakes and drizzle with melted red candy melts.
