  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1–2 stalks celery, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced or stewed tomatoes
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of water + 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F.
  2. In a large resealable bag, combine flour, salt, black pepper, and granulated garlic. Add cubed steak a few pieces at a time and shake to coat evenly.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a cast-iron Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the coated steak on both sides and set aside.
  4. Sauté onion, celery, bell pepper, and mushrooms in the same pot until softened. Stir in minced garlic and tomato paste for an additional minute.
  5. Pour in diced tomatoes, beef broth, thyme, sugar, and optional celery seed; return the browned steak to the pot.
  6. Cover and bake in the preheated oven for 1½ to 2 hours until fork-tender.
  7. To thicken gravy, mix cornstarch with water; stir into the remaining sauce over medium heat until thickened.
