  • ½ cup dried cherries (chopped)
  • 1 cup Dr. Pepper soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1â…“ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • ½ teaspoon all spice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In one bowl, combine prunes, dried cherries, and Dr. Pepper soda. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  4. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract into the butter mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, nutmeg, ginger, and all spice.
  6. Gradually combine dry ingredients into the wet mixture alternately with boiling water until just mixed.
  7. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 34 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let cool completely before frosting.
